The one big upside of SkyTrak over GC2 when I was making my decision was client hardware. I love the fact that I can pull out my phone and interface with the SkyTrak. I hope that model doesn't change in future versions.

I was hesitant in buying ST due to concern that a new model would appear soon(ish) and relegate the current version to a legacy product and support phased out. I bought one earlier this year though and am delighted. However, this thread is making me nervous, I'd much rather the current model was pushed to its limits and supported through our yearly subscriptions even if that meant they had to be raised modestly. If accessories are possible to improve the data then great but please don't replace the base unit or make it obsolete!

£2k isn't a lot of money in itself but it is tricky to justify to my family for a hobby when real life and my property requires as much as it does. In spending it i had hoped I would be good for a number of years, now I'm worried.

Why would your skytrak become obsolete?
If they released a machine for say 5k, that's a whole different price market from 1799 or whatever you can grab a skytrak at on sale nowadays. Sure, some people would jump all over it and sell their older unit but in no way would it become obsolete. They would still continue to improve the software for both units, most likely using the same software on both.

There's a market there if they could ever get to that 5k point and improve on their current skytrak hardware.

If what you say about any new product being some sort of Skytrak 'Plus' designed to coexist with Skytrak '1.0' as say entry and advanced level units turns out to be correct then I would be quite content with that. Sharing the same software would indeed be a logical move.

Like I said, for what I paid, I am delighted with Skytrak, it's allowed me to have a setup for indoor golf that I used to dream about but that I never thought possible and/or affordable. Maybe I'm worrying over nothing but I'm already concerned about what happened with the JNPG situation and, although I already have it, I'm just waiting on them pulling the plug on that completely at some point too, although I fully appreciate that is not SkyGolf's doing.

Some reassurance from the people at ST that whatever happens next, those who bought the current unit won't be left behind would be nice.

I can build out my homemade sim with the Skytrak, TGC, Gaming Laptop, Projector, Mat, Impact screen.

For the same cost as a GC2. Yes, Im missing some great data probably, but even Rmotion on during TGC has helped remind to swing inside to out.

Compared to GC2, I don't think you are missing any data. Accuracy is quite close, with the possible exception of high swing speeds. What you are stuck with is a 2 second delay. Doesn't bother me one bit. At the same price, I'd go with the GC2. Three times the price, no way. Split the difference, I'd think about it.

Like you said it’s splitting hairs. I would the complete build of the skytrak with all the simulator stuff for the GC2.
You not missing any data per se, but the way the data is calculated. It’s accurate most of the times.

It’s like the Verizon and sprint commercials. Sprint says everyone is within 1% of Verizon. Well 1% is a big deal if you’re talking the totially of the carrier network.
I know bad comparison, but yes you are basically getting the same data.

30 yards and in GC2 much more accurate. That's 70% of the game esp IRL. Not to mention the misreads are less

Thanks for sharing this info. Do you have a link to a comparison? I am really interested in ST accuracy 30 yards and in. My own testing had ST reading 10% long inside 30.

Not sure what you mean by 70%, at least in terms of game improvement. 20 to 30 yards are very rare IRL. Inside 20, lie, greenslope, roll out are such big factors, that it is best practiced on the course. Same for putts of course.

I suppose for sim, it matters more.

As for misreads, my ST does have them, about 5 percent overall. The only gc2 I have used was at golf store, and it was very finicky, but could be due to abuse by customers

My guess would be that we see an incremental hardware improvement that adds no functionality or accuracy but reduces the delay.

They could keep the camera, and most of the guts, but bring things up to current standards for the pieces responsible for data transfer. Eg. USB 2.0 Becomes USB 3.0. Wireless N at 2.4ghz becomes AC at 5ghz etc. (or whatever the old/new would be)

Since these pieces aren't highly custom for the launch monitor market it should be less expensive for skytrak to implement a spec bump than engineering a new technology.

Improved data transfer speeds has the potential to reduce the shot delay.

We must have all been in a similar situation in the past 12 months, comparing a ST to a GC2.

First you decided you'd look into the technology and costs behind each. Wow, $2,500 for a SK and peripherals to get into the game, versus $12,000 for a GC2. You paused and thought, well, there must be a big difference in accuracy for the money. So you investigated YouTube videos and went to as many different local simulators as you had around you, and you noticed that the differences in shot shape, distance, spin and other "uber-hobbeyist" level features were quite similar, for the most part less than 1-2% difference in distance and shape (my experience at least).

After a month of this hobbyist and father of a varsity golf players research, I could not in any way justify the cost of a GC2. The software tools of the ST, it's integration with WGC and it's portability from backyard to driving range, in addition to SP and iPad integration, made it a no brainer.

I suspect many others reached this conclusion.

In what universe does a GC2 cost 12k? They can be had for just under 4k if you're lucky

Correction, It's 5200 for the gc-2 refurbished. That gives you 5 software choices. And more confidence that what the ball is doing reflects real life. The guys who take their game most seriously for all around improvement and who have the extra cash Pony up for the GC2.

And I bought my refurbished ST for $1500, so it seems the relative pricing holds. I have no doubt that those who play or teach golf for a living would be likely to go to GC2, Quad, TM or FS..

I agree, I think that would be a natural progression with the unit, and something that would add a lot of value. I know I’d consider upgrading the unit to get near real-time results...

I think once you get inside 40 yards it’s mostly feel in outdoors golf. I practice 40, 50, 60 etc.. I have the skytrak and it seems to be super accurate. I can almost predict the exact yard the shot will carry to based on the quality of my strike. Uncanny the accuracy. It would be nice if they reduced the delay and the misreads with a new model.I’m not familiar with frequency of misreads on the gc2.
I’m not a big fan of buying used so it is substantially more expensive when comparing new ST vs GC2.

They are stated on the site to be working on a graphics update, timing tbd. The development team is A++ and no doubt will deliver when ready!
