Skytrak low spin numbers with wedges

Hey guys I have had my skytrak for a couple weeks now and I seem to have very low spin for a pitching wedge around 2200. The odd time it will read anywhere from 7000-9000 but very rarely. I am not an expert golfer by any means and have never checked my spin numbers on a different launch monitor but do those seem extremely low? Or am I just not hitting the ball correctly? I am hitting off a fiberbuilt flight deck.

I have a new (for me) SkyTrak and noticed the balls I was hitting were around the same spin in the low 2000's .. so I busted open a new sleeve of Kirkland and using the same club (SW) I seen MASSIVE spin difference. Here are two screenshots of one of the Kirkland and one of the old Noodle.. I also mixed it up for 9 and 6 iron and 4 wood and the spin was significantly more with the new ball and the launch angle was more impressive with the Kirkland as I normally have a higher launch angle with SW that hits at the top of the screen and the Kirkland were much much lower which I prefer to see .... Try a different ball and see if your results change too!

Forgot to mention I am hitting off of the same mat as you!

Make sure a logo is facing the unit and also, maybe play it a little forward of the laser dot. See if that helps

I wanted to share some of my numbers this is with a Vokey (CC) 50 degree and about a 3/4 swing and using a 2017 Chrome Soft and a Matzilla Ultimate Super Tee Golf Mat. The numbers seem consistent accept for the mishit here and there I'm just an average golfer. I know that If I use say a Supersoft the spin numbers on average will drop 2500 rpm so the type of ball you use will have a big effect on spin numbers and also the mat your hitting off of

Just confirming what everyone else has been saying really but it'll be your balls You need to check them regularly as your doctor tells you too... If I go to the range and use beaten up bad range balls then I can see those sorts of spin numbers with wedges however at home on my practice mat with good quality balls then the spin numbers are right back where they should be

Thanks guys I have been using just recycled golf balls. I will try some new ones tonight. Didn't think older to new balls could make that big of a difference .

They absolutely will depending upon how worn the ball appears to the ST. First question they will ask is are you using a new ball.

I can confirm that I started with Noodles and they quickly would not spin when hit from the mat. I switched to Titleist and TaylorMade balls and spin has greatly improved.

When you say it would not spin, what was the actual reading? Readings should not be in the 2k range with full wedge shots. Yes you will see a large change going from a noodle to a prov, something possibly around 2k spin difference, going from like 6-8k to 8-10k.

Hitting off a mat with a noodle in my garage would ready between 3 to 5k. It depended on how long I hit the noodle. First shots got the most spin and then it tended to degrade. My full wedge shots with Titleist and Taylormade spin between 8 to 10k,
Chrome soft tended to spin even higher,

Those are exceptionally low spin rates. Since they are consistent, I don't think there is an issue with the device. Could be a combination of low spinning ball, the effect of mat, and a swing that promotes low spin.

LPGA numbers are a good proxy for amateur male. Spin rate for full pitching wedge is 8400. Since this was not a full swing, probably should be around 7700. Non-premium ball could cost 2000+, and a beat up ball even more so. Most mats don't provide enough friction, so the ball slides up the face, resulting in a high low spinning shot.

Still, 2200 is very low, hard to reconcile.

It seems my spin #'s are higher if I just lightly hit the ball maybe a half swing or less it will read in the 4-5 thousand range. Every once in awhile I get one that reads 10000~ish at 3/4 to just about full swing. I have tried lining up the monitor with alignment sticks,hitting from different spots around the dot, raising and lowering my monitor. Setting the dot to exactly 12inches from the monitor, made sure logo is towards monitor but still not reading .I will try some new balls tonight and see if that changes everything. Sounds like that has helped a few people.

That should not happen. I don't think it has anything to do with your machine, but I could be wrong. I think something happens to your contact during full swings. You could start with the half swing, and gradually add ball speed while monitoring spin and VLA to see where things go wonky. Higher ball speed should mean more spin.

If you have a golf galaxy or access to another LM, you could check that too as a reference. Take the same balls you hit on the ST with you.

I tried some new costco TM rocketballz tonight and my spin numbers are spot on. Anywhere from 7000-10000 on my 45° PW. I then went back to the used balls and they were back down to that 2000-3000 range. Thanks for all the suggestions! Much appreciated.

Good to hear. For the spin to drop that much, those must have been some very beat up balls.

I am still very puzzled why a half swing could spin more than a full swing. Crappy balls aside, that defies all logic.

I bought some cheap used Bridgestone balls to play in the winter (it gets soft here so lost balls to plugs can be frequent enough to make using expensive balls not worth it).

I hit some on my Skytrak with an 8 iron and the first couple had lower than usual spin but not crazy low. After hitting maybe 10 shots I noticed they were carrying way too far and it was due to spin rates under 4K. Upon looking at my club a film had developed from the ball that was taking all friction away. Once I scrubbed it off the next few were close to normal distance/spin until the film developed again. I had never seen anything like it.

Weird. Maybe the seller of the used balls used some type of cleaning agent that leaves a film.

Beating balls endlessly will leave an almost invisible plastic patina on your clubs.. its important to clean them
