  • I wish that someone could assess SkyTrak against Trackman or Flightscope using relatively clean balls on a clear and warm day without wind. Haha.

    • Davray - I don't know how to quote or post a comment so this is in reference to your comments:

Can you help me understand why the distance issues are "to be expected"?

Can you clarify something with the accelerometer? - Does the margin of error go down if the unit is, in fact, level - i.e. if its not compensating then its inaccuracy in minimized? If we have to think about as much error in launch as you are suggesting we might, it follows that we may have more of a toy than a tool. I understand you don't know the exact design specs of the actual unit and don't speak for Skytrak, just looking more for your insight than anything else.

Its not going to happen for a couple of weeks, but my instructor has Flightscope and I will test against it indoors..

            • just did a test in my house with new balls with the most of the white of the ball facing towards skytrak.
              15-19 is 56 degree
              20-24 is my pw
              25-29 is my 9 iron

i was actually starting to hit a baby draw with my shots probably because i was swinging harder. all of the club shots are about 10-20 yards shorter than normal.

                • Now i'm concerned. I haven't done any real testing with my short irons/wedges since I got it. I only did a few initial shots because it was said that it couldn't pick up short chips very well and I wanted to see how short it would pick up. Then I was just looking at launch angle to see if it was picking up flops vs punches. Looks like i will be doing some more testing when i get home. I've mainly been hitting 4-7 and hybrid and those appear to be pretty spot on for me. I hit indoors, under 4ft flourescent tube lights and my unit sits on a piece of wood that sits directly on the garage floor. So it will only be as level as the floor is. I use newer balls and always place the putting line logo facing the unit. Just do this out of habit, not sure if you're supposed to or not or if it makes a difference.

Also, I would like to see the slider for distance settings a little easier to control or be able to type in a set distance.

I have been designing my own camera based LM as a hobby project for some time and understand the tech behind. Inaccurate data for short irons and wedges is expected. The fact that they use an accelerometer to compensate for bad leveling will add to the error. Accelerometers are not very accurate when it comes to measuring absolute angles. Google it and you will find an article on the topic from one of the manufacturers. Depending on how they do the static and dynamic calibration and compensation, the error could be up to 10 degrees in both H ad V LA. The shorter the captured ball travel the worse it gets.I plan to order one just for fun as soon as they are available in EU and will test the accuracy with my cameras.
I can confirm the SkyTrak's LA is spot on. LA is actually one of the easiest parameters to measure. This was verified using ProTee's Vertical camera and compared with the GC2. Now having said that, the user must make sure the SkyTrak is completely level. I would suggest using a small carpenter's level. If the unit is not level by 2 degrees, the LA readings will be off by 2 degrees, which will of course affect carry.

                              • I don't know what the columns on that screenshot are, or I would do it myself, but it would be interesting to plug the ball data numbers into the flight scope optimizer and see what flight scopes model predicts and compare.

FlightScope's Trajectory Optimizer is a golf ball flight trajectory program. The program will plot the flight of the ball in real time after the user's input of the initial launch conditions of the golf ball. Based on scientific algorithms, FlightScope's Trajectory Optimizer will help you find your optimal ball flight trajectory to add distance to your golf shots.
