  • SkyTrak Issues since last release

    Hey Guys ...

I've been a SkyTrak owner for well over a year and have been a follower of this forum for about that long as well. Thanks for all the questions and answers. Unfortunately, since the last release, I've been having some issues that I've never experienced and wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

    1. Can't get the SkyTrak to connect in Network mode. I've tried resetting the SkyTrak, reloading the app on my iPad Pro, resetting my router, taking the SkyTrak near the router. I've never needed an extender in the past as I've got a very good router that more than covers my house and yard. I can get it to connect in Direct mode but when I go to move to network mode and do a search for available networks, mine don't even pop up, regardless of how close I am to the router. I don't have this problem with any other wireless devices in my home. Any thoughts?

    2. Reseting the Skytrak doesn't appear to work. The instructions say to depress the button at the bottom of the unit and hold until all 3 light turn amber. Unfortunately, the lights never turn amber.

    3. I've had very few misreads but it does appear that the yardage is off on the low side. I've seen a decrease in distance on most mid and long irons.

Can anyone provide guidance on the first item? That's probably the most important one as I worry about data loss and am unable to setup new users.

As it relates to the new users, if I want to add my son, is he going to require his own package? Or will he be able to leverage my package when he's using the SkyTrak?

    Thanks for all the help!

    1. Make sure your wifi router is emitting a 2.4GHz signal, not 5 GHz, and that there are no special characters in the SSID or password.

    2. Use a needle (it's a very tiny hole at the bottom of the big center hole), have the power to the unit on, and hold in for at least 10 seconds. You'll feel it depress. Lights will blink once done.

    3. Most new users or higher handicappers think distance is short. Most very good golfers think distance is spot-on. It's usually a combination of ISS (see https://gunghogolf.com/blog/indoor-s...ndrome-skytrak) and not actually knowing your true AVERAGE carry distances.

SkyTrak now supports multiple user accounts, so your son can track his sessions separately at no extra cost.

      Thanks Gung Ho

      1. Router emits both 2.4 and 5 GHz and has worked with my SkyTrak before without a problem. The issue has surfaced since the release.

      2. I did not try to reset it with the power connected. I'll try that. I was using a very small screwdriver and could feel it depress and click so I don't think that's the problem.

      3. I've had my ST for well over a year and am a single digit handicapper with a very good feel for my distances. I no longer have issues with ISS as I got past that after the first couple of months using the ST. I'm not sure what's going on with this one.

I'm going to try your suggestion on number 2 and see if that helps resolve number 1.

      Thanks again.

So I tried Gung Ho's way to reset and after 4-5 tries it looked like it did. I got 3 amber lights. I then tried to connect to my router with the ST and iPad within 10 feet of it and it still wouldn't identify the router. I actually have 2 routers, my AT&T and a NetGear Nighthawk. Neither one showed up when I searched for networks. Interestingly enough, on occasion, a network with no name would show up. So I tried to manually add the correct network and that caused me to have to reset the ST again. Very confusing and frustrating.

I think someone in another thread indicated that they were having issues when launching the app that it would stall out at either 98% or 100% and just sit there. That has happened to me frequently since the update. I just keep reloading the app until it works but also a new problem since the release.

Thanks for the help Gung Ho. If anyone else has any ideas, I'd sure appreciate them.

          1. I wanted to give WGT, so I tried to put my unit in network mode for the first time. Exact same issue. I even changed the password on my router to see if that would help. No dice. Off-topic rant, but I made the mistake of updating the router firmware in the process. Big mistake. There is a "set region" bug that locks any future admin level changes. Every alexa and other smart device in the house is knocked off right now. I don't know what is quicker, factory resetting the router or changing the password on every device.

          3. With all due respect, what Ron said. The firmware didn't change. The image processing engine did change slightly, and SHOULD only do one thing differently, and that is increase high ball speed for 150+mph shots. Is it possible some mysterious bug is robbing us of distance? Yes, but highly unlikely. I don't know what is causing it. There are TONS of anecdotal reports that update reduced distance. However, if you google "skytrak update distance", you will see similar concerns for every single update. The vast majority of updates did not change a single thing that could possibly affect distance.

I do see the stuck at 98% issue once in a while. In direct mode, the correct sequence is to log into app on home wifi. Then get out of app, change wifi to ST, then go back into app. If I don't do it in this order, I get stuck at 98%, and must hard close the app.

So I was able to connect with SkyTrak technical support and after a bunch of back and forth we were able to figure out how to remedy the problem with not being able to connect in network mode. It did come down to having to reset the unit and here are the steps.

            1. Unplug the SkyTrak unit from the wall if it's charging and turn it on.
            2. Depress the button at the bottom of the SkyTrak with a pin, jewelry screwdriver or paper clip until all the lights turn amber. This should take about 10 seconds. In my case, this didn't work so we had to take an extra step.
            3. If step 2 fails, you need to remove the SkyTrak from range of the wireless network. You can either go outside to get out of range or shut your wireless network off to accomplish this. I went outside to remove the unit form the network.
            4. Once out of range, repeat step 2. This time, I did get three amber lights. Once the lights turn amber, you can release the button. The unit should now show solid red, solid red, solid green and be ready to get setup in direct mode.
            5. Connect your tablet or PC to the SkyTrack wifi based on the appropriate instructions for you tablet or PC.
            6. Once connected to SkyTrak wifi, launch the application and give the unit a minute to register and connect in direct mode.
            7. You can now proceed to connect in network mode. In my case, when I went to search for wireless networks, they still didn't show up in the available networks list. This time, however, I was able to my enter my 2.4 GHz network manually. Select the appropriate security protocol. If you don't know what it is, support recommended to default to WPA AES which worked for me.
            8. Once you setup your network manually, it should show up in the available networks list. From there, select it and accept. The ST should then migrate to network mode and you should be good to go.

The big learning here was about the need to remove the ST from the network to reset. I hope this helps anyone experiencing similar problems.

Thank you for the steps. I took the leap into tgc, and will probably use network mode. I have seen the out of range advice before, but since I direct connect 99.9% of time, I never paid attention.
