  • Non Gas Garage Heater

Beginning a simulator build in the small stall of a 3 car garage. Ceiling is sheet rocked but not insulated, looking for any suggestions to heat this area. I don't have gas to the garage so electric might be my only option, I live in Minnesota, where even in the garages it can get easily below freezing. Thanks for any suggestions or options that might help

I have electric in mine. You can always get a propane torpedo heater. Only takes a few minutes to warm up the garage. You could borrow mine if you want to try it first.

I was always under the assumption that anything gas whether it be LP or propane you needed to have ventilation? if its below zero out kind defeats the purpose to open a door to vent out the bad gases?.. am I wrong?.. I hope I am.. I do have a torpedo heater but always have cracked open the garage door.. hoping to find something where ventilation isn't a issue.. Thanks for your suggestions..

I agree with Craig. I use the Mr. Heather Big Buddy to heat a two stall garage in the northeast. I hook up a small propane tank, fire it up, and warm enough to play within about 15 mins. You will want to plug it in and use the blower to distribute the heat however. Never felt there was any issues with fumes, etc.

I have a vent free natural gas infrared heater hanging in the garage on a thermostat. Small fan behind it, no venting. Never had a problem. I lined the immediate ceiling with a thin concrete board though for extra fire prevention. It's great. Thermostat is nice.

Garage golfing in the winter is the best! While I understand it would be warmer in the basement or other area of the house. It's nice to leave the house and lock the family out while you hit shank after shank.

Last winter I was in my garage playing TGC and there was 20 inches of snow at the door. What a great feeling!

Cool, I'm going to have to do the same. I think I'll try Mr. Heater unless anyone else chimes in with an interesting option.

Am I the only one thinking it might be dangerous to run propane heater in a non-ventilated room? I'm pretty sure the Mr.Heater box has a disclaimer about running it indoors.

Probably not 100% ideal - but as long as you aren't smoking cigars it's probably OK

I wouldn't recommend a propane heater. It requires good ventilation. So use at your own risk!!!

The best choice is a 220 Electic heater. I have the Remington.http://www.remingtonheater.com/Electric_Heaters.php

You just need to install a 220 outlet and just plug it in and mount it. It heats very well! I first used a propane heater and returned it because it was dangerous to use in a closed garage. Electic heater is the best solution, but can't be a regular 110 heater because they don't put out enough heat. Just do the work and install a 220 outlet and then you can have a safe solution that works well.

The problem there is getting 220 in the garage, another expense. Sure that would be the best way, but after buying everything else it's definitely not on my 'phase 1' deployment.

Where does carbon monoxide poisoning and potentially death fit into phase 1?
Seriously though, I too have my sim in the garage and put in a 110V heater and heats it up well enough to play and besides after a few swings you will warm up. Don't take a chance with propane, carbon monoxide is an odorless silent killer, you won't even know you're breathing it in until it's too late.

See page 2 of the pdf attached. Yes it is safe indoors but there must be ventilation available, both for oxygen to come in and carbon monoxide to escape.

If it were me I would use the Big Buddy to take the chill out and use an electric heater to maintain

I'd agree that's probably a good compromise. Any recommendations for a 110 electric heater?

I absolutely love that the Skytrak forum is at the point (at the beginning of golf Sim Season) where the hottest topic is how to heat your garage,

                    This is absolutely priceless!!!!!!!
