  • Bama Gambler Golf Club - my sim project

I've had a net return plus skytrak for about 6 months. I decide to start small to make sure I would actually hit balls at home. I love it! Time to upgrade. I'll post my progress in this thread.

Here is my net return setup.

    1. I switched my loft from 12 degrees down to 10.5 degrees. I was hitting it too high.

    2. I figured out that the longer the club the quicker I swing. I get really quick at the top. I read this book called "Tour Tempo" and it really helps. I got the iPhone app and I was hitting balls today with the 27:9 tempo music and wow what a difference.

    3. I got an TaylorMade M2 three wood about a month ago and I've been killing it. So I went to the PGA SuperStore to compare the M2 driver with my R15. I couldn't hit the M2 driver well at all. Last week I got to thinking maybe the shaft in that M2 wasn't right for me. So I bought an M2 head (just the head on eBay) and attached it my current shaft. Love that combination.

Today I decided to do a little test with the R15 vs the M2 (using the same shaft). I hit 10 balls with the R15 head and then switched to the M2 head using the tempo timer with both. I hit the R15 pretty bad (lots of shots were 30+ yards left or right of target). For some reason the M2 head just looks better at the ball and I swing better. On average I hit the M2 20 yards longer.

Awesome info! Was thinking about testing out an M1 or M2 myself and really cool seeing the difference. Its amazing the yardage difference you got with the same shaft. Curious as to why you think the ball speed (and even club head speed) went up that much. I know you said it just looked better to you but do you think the head itself was lighter, heavier, gave a better launch, just the lower loft change, maybe was more stable feeling somehow, etc..... curious if you thought about it more in depth as to why it worked so well, ive lowered and raised loft before and didn't seem to make a crazy difference for me, but im still using a original nike covert and still not sure or not if the new club heads out there really make much of a difference. My spin numbers are decent most of the time for my driver so not too worried about that, but I thought I heard someone say that pretty much all manufacturers of drivers all have hit the max coefficient of whatever that basically give the club the max amount of trampoline effect like 6 or whatever years ago, so basically any driver we buy for the last bunch of years wouldn't actually be able to increase ball speed strictly by what driver head you are using.

Guess thats part a question to you and everyone with some more in-depth driver head knowledge than me haha

    Great stuff as always!

Yeah the difference really surprised me. I think mostly it was just better swings. I'm not sure why I swing better with the M2 head, but I do. I feel like I can feel it better throughout the swing. I'm not sure if that is because it is lighter or heavier (I'm not even sure there is a difference in weight). It really is strange. Most of the comparisons I've seen on the R15 vs the M2 amount to about 3-5 yards of difference. I do feel like the M2 does better with off center hits vs the R15 (although most of those M2 hits were center hits).

Tempo. Tempo. Tempo. I'm practicing with Tempo Tour app and Zepp 2 (will show you your tempo). My tempo was 2.2:1. The closer I get it to 3:1 the better I hit it. It is hard for me to get 2.7:1, but today I got one 2.9:1 and what do you know it was my longest driver ever on the GC2. 297 yards!

What are you using to take the video in the bottom left corner?

Very interesting. don't think ive ever really though much about tempo the entire time ive been golfing other then in passing to just keep a good rhythm on my swing. I might have to look in to it some more. I just keep on getting the feeling like why do I need to buy a whole thing to just show my tempo, cant i just eyeball it on video and save the money, but must be something more to it then I realize obviously. Awesome drive and great seeing the results coming that quickly for you!

There is an app that will let you count the frames to check your tempo. I'm sure you could count frames in any video editing software too. I need the sounds to help me though because my tempo is so fast currently. I like the Zepp 2 because I can immediately see my tempo after a swing without having to count frames. If you already have good tempo, then you wouldn't need the sounds or the Zepp 2.

To check your tempo count the number of frames from the start of the backswing to the top of the backswing, then count the number of from the top of the backswing to impact. According to the book the ratio of those two number should be 3:1. Almost all tour players have a 3:1 swing even if some look faster than others. Ernie Els looks like his tempo is slower than Nick Price, but they are both 3:1. Price takes less time on his backswing but also less time on his downswing so the ratio still comes out 3:1.

Never knew that about tour players, that's crazy and kinda cool that they all do that same tempo, it's like a secret to get into the club haha. I'm gonna check out what mine is if I can now

I have the SF i85's in a set and I also have recoil 95's in another, both in regular flex. I don't have nearly the SS you have. I love the graphite in irons, i've even gone to it in my wedges.

Very cool. I have steel in my wedges, but I wouldn't be opposed to getting graphite next time.

Shot 81 with two triples today. Shanked my 7i on one par 3 and blocked my 4h out of bounds on another. Those two horrible shots and I still only lost 1.2 strokes with my approach shots. I drove the ball amazing today including one 350 yard driver (downhill hole and it landed on a downslope).

I can't putt right now. I'm can't make anything outside of 3 ft. Well I made one 9 footer for birdie but that is the only putt I made outside of 3 ft.

I think my problem is reading the green. If you set me up from 6 ft and I know where to aim I can hit them all day long. I'm trying to find an Aimpoint Express coach. If that doesn't do the trick for me then I'll check out Sam PuttLab.

Aimpoint is great, if you don't mind looking a bit odd on the green, holding your hand / fingers up lol I did a course, and have to say it's great, then learnt to visualize holding my hand out, then go on the putting green before a round and 're-calibrate' my visualization depending on the green speed

Uh oh. Someone learned how to putt. 😀

Nice shooting. Was that with the use of Aimpoint?

No. Haven't done Aimpoint yet. I did get there early today and spend about 30 minutes putting. I figured out I wasn't aligning the putter face where I thought. It was left of where I intended. We will have to wait and see if I can putt well next round. Speed control hasn't been my problem so I didn't have to change anything there.
