Buy Impact Screen Fabric Directly from Mill

As a cost sensitive person attempting to build a high quality simulator, I realized purchasing the correct impact screen is critical to both the simulator's overall performance and it's price tag. It should be affordable, durable, seamless, impact resistant, have minimal bounce back, low noise, and display HD quality images.

West Coast Netting, Par2Pro, Foresight, Carl's Place and others listed in various forum threads all sell screens but none actually manufacture them. Buying second hand increases cost and my goal to buy the highest quality materials at the best possible price can only be accomplished by purchasing direct from the mill that manufacturers the fabric.

After plenty of research I found the mill that's manufacturing the impact screen fabric for Foresight, Carl's Place and others. The mills highest quality impact screen fabric is a heavyweight knit polyester sold only in 120 inch x 40 yard rolls. The raw material costs $56/yard without shipping.

40 yards is clearly too much material for my simulator so I'm looking to get a group of us on the forum to split a roll.

I have a screen with one side that has a horizontal line through it. Its a production defect. Was going to dump it believe its 18 ft but if anyone wants it for 10.00 per foot let me know.

I mentioned previously that I had received my screen and had taken the raw material into a sailmaker to have them finish it for me. I asked the sailmaker to hem it all round and sew velcro around the perimeter on both sides and to install grommets on all four sides and finish to a specified height and width in order for it to be easily overlaid over my existing archery screen. The sailmaker called me today and asked me to go down to his loft as he was setting up to do the job. When I first discussed the job with him he pointed out to me that when you sew fabric along its length it generally contracts due to the effect of the stitching pulling the fabric in ending up in a slightly shorter finished size and because I had specified the dimensions he wants to ensure that he could get it as close as possible. We discussed this and agreed to take an off-cut along the length and height of the screen and stitch it so we could then gauge the effect the stitching would have and then factor that probable reduction in length and height in to compensate.
When he had completed stitching the offcuts he was surprised to see that the length off-cut had grown considerably and the height off-cut not so much. In fact after stitching the length off cut had grown by approximately 3 feet, mines is a 16 foot screen. The off-cut is just a small piece in a height sense but is the full length of the screen ie 16 feet and we agreed that a screen of the full height would probably not stretch as much . The sailmaker wanted to discuss the process that he planned to use to minimise any distortion before he did the job.
When I arrived he had the fabric laid out on his table and pinned down to try to emulate the tension that would be on my screen when mounted on my frame. I have my existing screen mounted to tubular steel frame using ball bungees every 300mm on all 4 sides and the tension is great with negligible bounce back. He explained that he was going to glue the velcro to the screen prior to stitching while still under tension, then stitch one side and repeat the process for the other side, the concept being that the velcro will help stabilise the screen fabric while the stitching is carried out.

I am detailing this to help anyone who is having their screen finished just as a heads up to consider the stretching aspect if you are trying to finish to a pre-determined size, I think the sailmaker is a meticulous type of craftsman and wanted to bring to my attention his methodology and that I was happy for him to proceed using that plan.
He hopes to have the screen finished for Monday, and I plan to get it mounted asap and will photograph the image and try to compare to my existing screen , I am certain that it will be a big upgrade and just in perfect time for the Ryder Cup. I have attached a pic of the screen set up on his bench for finishing for interest. He asked for just over £200.00 for the job which I thought was fair for the work involved.

I received my screen yesterday. It seems quite high end and thick. I had a chance to compare the image with the one I have now from Golf simulator. I set it up so I could see half the image with this new screen and half with the old screen. It compares favorably. Very nice dbgolf72.
