  • FSX 2018 is very good

I got FSX 2018 yesterday. I am very new to FSX, but I can say for sure the graphics difference from FSX to FSX 2018 is huge. I was not impressed with the graphics in the old version. I even own the expensive courses, and the graphics were marginal. FSX 2018 is a huge difference in the graphics quality! I would say the included courses graphics are about as good as TGC, and the expensive courses look even better than TGC. I am extremely impressed with the graphics quality with FSX 2018. I have not spent enough time to tell you about other features added or upgraded.

Yeah, that's pretty much what it looked like to me. They are selling the update before it's actually released. The 4.0 is actually 3.55 as you say. Pretty shitty IMO. Hopefully we will see the real 2018 in the next month and hopefully it won't be riddled with bugs.

I just purchased FSX2018 to replace the old version. I downloaded it last night along with the 3 premium courses. Does anyone know what updates are coming in March. I just assumed everything was already done. Adding cameras (2), improved graphics, and adding a monitor for club data were the reasons for the update in the first place. I've been following the posts and this is the first I've heard of future updates. Thanks!!

Classic Foresight. Charging $500 for an “upgrade” that is not even ready. Can you imagine any other business doing this and getting away with it? It’s honestly crazy! They must be using the $ scamming folks into FSX 2018 to pay their engineers so they can finish the product......unreal.

I think my biggest problem with the upgrade is that the graphics still are too blurry and lack detail at any distance away from you.

They need to expand their detail settings in the options. 4k ability at low detail is pointless. Lets not forget the price of a good 4k projector is still high.

I also still have the same bugs as before that drive me crazy.
Good example here in my video I sent to foresight. Ball in stuck in the weeds that poke out of the water. Game needs a better ball drop option.

Also I like to use lie penalties but there system is so unpredictable. Hit a perfect 240 fairway wood on the gc2 for it just to drop 40 yards in front of me. I just need more details on the shot and potential peniltys.

I would recommend to most people to wait for the entire upgrade to be released before you buy it. You are not missing anything yet.

I’ve queried the lie penalty several times. Most games / software indicate where the ball is and a percentage of loss from this. FSX is a pure guess. 3 yards off the edge of the fairway, and a perfectly struck shot can go half distance!

I’ve also queried drops too. In real life if my ball goes in the middle of a forest, the chances are I don’t find it. Even if I do, I drop it and take a penalty.
FSX makes me keep hacking at it until it’s eventually out. No such thing as an ‘unplayable lie’.

Trouble is Foresight think FSX is the greatest thing out there, and aren’t prepared to listen to any criticism.

Have you ever looked at FSX Live HMT data? I often have shots that the dot for ball strike isn’t even on the club face, yet the 7 iron went 165yards and straight! If I’d looked at it in FSX when playing, it’d have been slightly low on the face. The scaling online is totally off.
Once again, I reported this about 6 months ago and they are now ‘aware of the issue’ after me sending multiple comparison screen shots.
How’s about DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT then?!!! A scaling issue can surely be fixed relatively easily.

I also had some HMT data which showed an impact outside of my club stickers like on the edge of the club way outside of groove lol. It was a well struck shot though, just a misread I think because it was outdoor.

I go back and analyse my FSX Live data after my round. The majority of the HMT data online shows the strike point in the wrong place.
The data in FSX when playing seems to be correct, however the online data afterwards is just rubbish!

I agree, not seeing a reason to purchase this until it is actually release. At the end of the day I guess it doesn't matter when you buy it but I'd prefer to actually get what they are touting when I pay. The initial release should have just been an update to the existing "version".

I'm hoping that the new trees are going to address the low resolution trees in the distance. On thing I have noticed with 4K is you get more detail in the trees at a greater distance. Still if it's 100yrd+ out the trees appear as if you are near sighted.

One BIG missing component is a lie view. Like you say, you can get into situation where it a total guess as to where your ball is. Also, an explanation of the penalty system would be nice but I think it's completely random as to what is going to happen. It's so bad I usually just leave it off which kinda sucks.

          Here's the latest:
All-new engine featuring deferred lighting (dependent upon new course updates, available as created). • All-new trees for the highest level of realism (Spring 2018) • Dual monitor support - now control what data is displayed on each screen (Spring 2018) • 2 camera support • Draw/edit to video • Click-to-zoom data in reports • All-new improved user interface(Spring 2018) • New roll model to set green speed • New green + green fringe sliders to set bounce (Spring 2018) • Many more new features!

So it looks like they sold the upgrade before anything was really done at all. What was March is now Spring and the deferred lighting they were bragging about is dependent upon new course updates available as created. I will be buying the upgrade, but when it is ready. I am also hoping to sweeten the deal with my sales rep to justify this cash grab. They tout a new engine, but it is the SAME engine, which should be no charge!!!!

Argh, I figgin knew it. Sometimes I hate being right! Maybe I'll wait until FSX2019 and save $500 bucks ( course it will probably be $1000 to upgrade from FSX). That should be out Spring 2019 and the 2018 features might actually be in there and most of the bugs fixed.

I'm in the same boat. One would think I would have learned from 2014 that their software moves at a snails pace. I'm like the kid who keeps sticking his hand in the fire even though he knows it's hot. They have again said that there will be no upgrade fees once you purchase the FSX 2018, but that was also said to me after I purchased FSX. I will reluctantly purchase the upgrade, but I'll sit on my money this time. I figure it will be out in Summer when no one really cares, and it will probably still be buggy. Also, by Foresight putting a year on the software and not a version, makes it an easy cash grab for the future. Foresight really knows hot to kick its customers straight in the nuts and we can do nothing about it!

mmlincoln, I really like your videos on youtube and when you mentioned Olazabal and Spring City Mountain, I thought that they looked like ones I have never owned, but really well done courses. I was going to ask for those 2 to be included when I purchase the upgrade, but now I wonder if they are working on new courses for their NEWER engine! Time will tell..........

We need to get it from them in writing that there will be no upgrade fees from18, and all hold them to it next year when they pull some 2019 cash grab bs.

Thanks, I'll be getting the rest of the library up shortly. It's very beta at this point but I'm putting together a website that has some useful info on all the courses. The big ones are the scorecard and weather. It drives me nuts you can make changes to players tees or weather once the course loads, so I put this together so I can check before loading. I'm pulling the info from their API and so far the weather is spot on. Anyway, you can check it out at www.mdmsg.com. Let me know if you have any ideas for improving it. Still lots to do.

Should be able to stick a ratings WP plugin on the course list and comments. I think a lot of people who want to buy a course would benefit from other users opinions.

Yeah, something for that is in the plan. Just haven't gotten there yet. This is a side project I work on when I can.

Eh, whats the point? They will just rename it to FSX2019 and it won't be a lie. Just like they did with FSX to FSX2018. Technically, FSX never did have an upgrade fee. The upgrade fee is to go to FSX2018 which is a totally different ( or um same) product!

But once FSX 2018 is finally ready, it will be either 2019 or a couple months before. Right now, everybody is still technically playing FSX, so this time period shouldn't count. With everything they are releasing (i.e. Quad Backpacks, Quad Tour Bags, relatively worthless game studio apps, etc.), they are really coming off as desperate and trying their hardest to raise money to fund their launch monitors or Butch Harmon, Martin Hall, & Michael Breed.

LOL, yeah they are kinda all over the place. Don't get me started on the game studio apps, whoever is in charge of that is on crack! $500 bucks? I thought about getting it for my kids, who are gamers, and they laughed saying that is how much? "Don't get it, that is a total BS ripoff " and that is a quote from a 12 and 13 yr old. FS should take note. Honestly, those games should be free. Buy our hardware, get some FREE games.

I keep going back and forth about buying this update. I'm a little afraid when they actually release the update the price will jump to $1000 or more. Crap, with the promoting of their courses I do I should get the damn software for free. That isn't really my intention but building the videos is time consuming. Well, maybe it's not promoting....discouraging? LOL

I agree with you.......you do a lot more and better promoting of there software than they will ever do. The flybys they use sometimes are totally mislabeled and the wrong hole. Some you can't even watch. You should be getting some free courses!! I use to feel the same way because I would offer insight/feedback, but not nearly the level or service you are providing for the residential customer. You should tell your rep about the site you created, which is very nice, and maybe they can at least throw 5 courses your way with the update. Worth a try!

I’m now on FSX18. I do see a big improvement on the graphics, personally, and I think it’s a huge improvement. I see what everyone is saying about the interface. Is almost the same, just has some necessary settings added.

Perhaps they mean the graphics engine is totally new? That I would agree with if said. You really notice it on the skills challenge. It looks really really good.

With the two cam, it looks like they added support for Point Grey. I wish my IDS camera would work.

Hopefully they get the other stuff done sooner ther than later and I hope it’s all they expect it to be. I agree that it’s tough that it is only partially released now.

It's definitely not a new engine. It looks like they just retouched the color of the grass and enabled a real light engine. While it makes it look better. I would say it's more like turning the detail settings from low to medium.

I just upgraded to FSX 2018 and I am looking to purchase 2 cameras. I have browsed the Forum for ideas for a good, affordable camera but can't find any clear recommendations. Ideally would want 120fps but I guess that less than that would be OK as well. Any ideas? I am really looking forward to using all the video analysis tools that FSX 2018 will offer. Thanks.
