    Normal percentage of non-reads?

What would you all say is the normal percentage of non-reads with a SkyTrak? I'd say for me it's 10-15 percent. Is that normal? Granted, I am using Callaway HX foam balls (for now) which are orange, but the times I have hit "clean white balls" it seems pretty similar. It seems like non-reads are related mostly to light and shadows. My set-up is in a room with a skylight, and when it's bright outside, my non-read percentage goes up dramatically even tho' the unit is not in direct sunlight. Just curious as to the general experience.

I've never figured % but am glad to hear it happens to others as well. Mine seems to go in spurts. It will work fine and then all of the sudden have about 10 no reads in a row.

I agree that it goes in spurts. Two other things: I think part of it is the amount of 2.4 Ghz interference that's present. I'll also say it's worse in the simulator software (JNPG, for me) than it is in the SkyTrak app.

Only time it happens to me is when I thin one and it doesn't get high enough for the camera to see it.

I’m only using the Skytrak app so can’t comment on sim software. I get about 1 non-read a session lately (usually 1-1.5 hour sessions). At first it was a bit higher until I figured out most of my non-reads were because I would waggle and the laser would turn off and not reset before I hit the ball. I now watch that closely and non-reads are very rare.

That's a really good point about the waggle.

Depends on club, but probably 3% or less for shots in the "normal" range (ie. not shanked, toed, or topped). My daughter's woods are have white heads, and that causes more misreads.

It would be very nice if ST could report cause of no read. For example, network issue, cluttered image, or extremely high or low launch angle.

Mine is very similar to Gresh. I use mine exclusively outdoors in all types of weather without any sun shade or anything like that and I might get 1 misread pre hour of use. The only real time I get more than that is when I am hitting off a rain soaked mat and the water splashes onto the Skytrak lense which makes sense.

I reckon about 1 misread in 30. Though it can vary.

I am taking a guess at around 5% would be no-reads while using the ST. I think the majority are while playing a simulated round in WGT. I don't get many while practicing with just the ST driving range.

Are we supposed to remove the plastic sticker from the skytrak? Does this help reduce misreads?

Yes, remove the film that has pull tabs on it.

I would estimate about 1 in 30 shots for me is a misread. I suspect it is because I did not place the logo or alignment mark towards the cameras and it just couldn't pick up the spin -- but that is just a guess.

Additionally it seems to come in spurts. Sometimes I will get 2 or 3 shots in a row with no pickup. When this happens I make practice swings into the red dot until it goes out. That may be completely pointless but it seems to works for me.

skytrak app almost never, TGC maybe 1 or 2 around to none, TGC crashes for me more than misreads) JNPG - the worst - 2 to 5 per round. e6 - it just works.

I have the same trend of more no-reads in the sim than in the SkyTrak app. I did notice that the lens area of mine had gotten rather dusty. I think it's actually tiny bits of the CCE mat from wear. Haven't had time to try it cleaned yet.

Hey SkyTrak: As someone else mentioned, it would be very nice to know the various causes of no-reads. Could we get a sort of definitive list? I'd also like to know what actually triggers the cameras. The website says it's infrared. How does that work anyway? I'd guess it's the shaft breaking some kind of infrared beam???

Exactly - it's an infrared light curtain that is broken that controls the timing of the pictures. So aside from lighting, setup, etc, if you chunk one off the mat really hard, it may actually disturb that curtain and cause it to fire before the ball is even hit.

I have a DWquail mat. Similar to the CCE. My swing has become more of a picker and now my misreads are almost nil. Before I was a steep digger and it cause alot of problems.
I tried to vacuum the mat about once a week.

Seth, Thanks for the direct answer. I can definitely say that really fat shots register worse and ones picked clean better. And, alas, I realize that I have a really steep angle of attack. Trying to work on that.

I'm coming up on a year with this thing, used it a lot.

I will say, it's really good most of the time. I've had a lot more outdoor play recently, and getting much more in tune with my results after strike (maybe because I can never see the ball after I hit it outdoors), and the skytrak mirrors my feel for both direction and distance compared with outdoor. Also, because I play more outdoors now, I'm reserving the indoor play for mostly nice indoor conditions, meaning it's relatively cool in the garage.

Here is my list roughly from highest to lowest on no read reasons (in my opinion):
                      * Putting. In a TGC round, I'd still get around 20% or higher no reads on putts.
                      * Chipping. Similar to above. The higher the loft, the higher the no read, flops are like 75% failure, normal chip maybe 15%
                      * 3W off the deck. Similar to the flop I guess, just doesn't hit the sweet spot of the camera, so get consistent no reads, probably about 15%, even solid shots
                      * Poor lighting behind me, such as white objects etc. This would seem to cause problems for about 10% of shots, pretty consistent through a session
                      * Heat. I was playing in ridiculous heat sometimes, and this caused about 5-10% no reads, probably surging sometimes to 15-20%. However, this caused a lot more misreads too, I would hit one solid and straight and it would say 10 degrees left. This has almost gone completely now that conditions are cooler

If I eliminate the poor lighting and heat conditions, I'd say it's well under 5% for a full shot, maybe 2%, and the accuracy of distance and direction for reads seem amazingly good.

That's not normal at all, but you've got 2 solid strikes with the orange and foam balls A third potential strike with the skylight. Like you said, it may be shadows or even a reflection off something metal when it gets really bright outside.

Thanks. As I said, I see very little difference between the orange Callaways and clean white balls. So that's an upside for anyone wanting the safety of foam.
