  • Ball flight always a draw

    Hi all,
I used to just think it was my indoor swing, but pretty much every shot I hit registers as a draw, definite draws to hooks. I think too it to the range with me and I was hitting straight to bang fades but the unit was still showing draws.
Is this a common issue, some sort of calibration issue of something else?
    Thanks

Mine seems to get shot shape right 8 times out of 10 I would say. It usually doesn't get it so wrong its crazy but I might get a slight fade instead of a draw one time, a straight shot instead of a fade or draw another time when I know for certain I curved it (I can tell by the rebound off my impact netting). The only way to know for absolute sure though is to take it outside but in general, I wouldn't be able to tell if it has draw bias or not as I primarily hit a draw out on the course.

I believe, this has been talked about before, but I don't think setup can affect spin axis. The ST takes two pictures, sends them to your device, where the 3d dimensional spherical ball is flattened to a two dimensional representation and then ball speed, spin rate, spin axis, etc is calculated by comparing the images. I assume spin axis is calculated relative to the image sensor, so I am not sure if calibration is relevant to spin axis calculations. Maybe Seth can pipe in.

I did find that I got crazy readings with colored range balls. When I used premium balls outside, it was very accurate. I only had enough space to hit wedges, mind you, so spin axis and shot shape were not really part of the equation.

Yeah i get tons of draws/hooks too when in real life i'd probably hit one shot a round that draws or hooks. I hit it straight to fade in real life

The last session i did on my skytrak i hit 28 shots in a row that curved left - up to 30 yards off line

I dont know how much of it is the unit, how much is an indoor swing, or how much of it is maybe the matt (catching it a touch heavy which is closing the club face more so than it would in real life. Im using a CCE matt)

I've certainly had sessions where i've hit very few left and hit lots of straight shots, but i've never had a session where i hit lots of fades/slices. It seems very hard to get the ball to curve to the right for me

Do not discount "indoor swing". A year ago I spent some time getting over IS and slowly hit straighter and straighter shots indoors for progressively longer clubs until I was "cured". In about May I decided to concentrate on my pitching and hit hundreds of 50-70 yard half shots, and very few full shots.

Now I've just returned to hitting full shots indoors with ST and lo and behold - they are all starting 5 degrees left with lots of hook spin. 9 irons finish 35 yards left of target (which I never do outdoors). I suspect that I am reinfected!

I'll persevere and see what happens......................

I used to think it was an indoor swing thing but I was seeing the same results at a range, where the real ball flight was straight to baby fades.
It has me quite concerned as I've lost faith in it

It’s not just SkyTrak. I had SkyTrak and now GC2. Even my pitch shots hook a bit. I move the ball a little right to left, but it’s exaggerated on the sim. A 3 yard draw from 150 in real life becomes a 10 yard hook on the sim. I don’t draw wedges, but they snap off in the sim as well. TGC is a little more sensitive than Creative Golf 3D.

I'm definitely experiencing this too and I can't fathom what the cause is. I have always been a fader, and when I get it wrong it is a horrific push fade. On Skytrak I hit either big pull hooks or substantial draws and it's starting to frustrate me because I've paid a fair bit of money for something that does not even come close to replicating my game. I'm even trying massive over the top moves with a wide open face to see what happens and it just starts way left, fine, but curves dramatically further left. I can't get it to curve left to right at all. I haven't played a lot this summer but I'll be taking it to the range soon to do some consistency testing to make sure my swing hasn't changed somehow. BTW, I got the ST in April and initially I would say that it was reading ok and fades were definitely on the menu, maybe a little left biased but ok.

                Some checkpoints:

                1) The unit is definitely level with the ball
                2) the camera window is clean and dust free
                2) it is aligned with the FMJ case parallel to target line, I have tried the laser dot for alignment also, makes nno difference.
                3) I'm using a clean, new white ball with the logo pointed at the ST camera.
                4) the unit is level according to the bubble and the software
                5) lighting - I'm indoors in my newly converted space hitting off a decent teeturf mat. The shed is dimly lit, even on a pretty bright day but there is a big window facing directly opposite the Skytrak and my shadow is cast over the ball and the unit. Could this be a factor? I always play in natural light (so far, when winter and the dark night hits I'll be using the newly installed LED light).

Help would be greatly appreciated, I think it's a great thing otherwise and the potential for my practice and simple, pure enjoyment is huge but I just don't trust what it's telling me.

I had this issue in the beginning as well. What I did was set up my mat so it was aligned to my screen, with the hitting area centered on the screen.
Then I centered the projector on the screen as well.
I then set up my Skytrak by centering the laser on the center of the hitting area. I made a pattern for the front two screws of metal case from Skytrak (the ones parallel to the hitting area)
The pattern was made out of a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum 1 1/2" wide and about 3" longer so I could screw into the wood under the mat.
I then put a screw into the front of the template and started to align the unit.
I did this be hitting chips into the screen and slowly moving the unit until it was it was aligned properly. In my case, and I think it varies on different units, I was out about 3/8" from front to back. with the back end being farther away.
                  The results are much better.

I took my Skytrak to the range for the first time and it was an interesting experience.

I found the yards offline and direction was actually pretty realistic but the shot shapes were all over the place. Examples were drives that started on target and drew about 10 yards where the Skytrak accurately had me about 10 yards left of target but the ball got there by a pull fade or I'd hit a cut to end up right of target but push draw would be on the screen. This happened quite frequently.

The lighting was a bit odd as some storms were moving through so it went from cloudy to sun randomly peaking through but always behind the unit and the stall dividers blocked any direct light in any case.

I was using yellow range balls and I remembered seeing something about coloured balls not being great so I hit 5 white balls from my bag. All of these the Skytrak matched shot shape perfectly. Unfortunately the range only had yellow balls and I didn't want to empty my bag down range so it's possible it was just a fluke that the 5 were correct but in batches of 5 with the yellow balls probably 2 would be funny.

I may buy new irons soon and the fitter I used for my driver is pretty casual so I will probably take my Skytrak and compare against their Trackman at the same time.
