Short iron distances

Hello everyone! I had my ST for couple months now. I love it so far. I went ahead and bought the $199 package to get WGT, but I really have been doing the practice mode more than playing WGT. In-fact, I am not sure if I am all crazy about the WGT. I mean, the images are nice and all, but sometimes I would get stuck in a sand and I would not be able to get out of it because the ball would just not move. I would play 3 holes and then go back to the driving range mode lol

Anyways, recently I started to add a green in my practice session. I wanted to measure my accuracy at different ranges. Now, keeping in mind that my 5 iron is deadly on the real golf course, I just start of with that club. This is my go to club. On the course, I am able to hit it 180 yards constantly, sometimes 190-200 if I get hold of it just right. But with ST, it's a different story. Constantly I am only showing 150 yards in total distance. Even when I hit it what it feels like a pure hit, the ball goes not even remotely as far as I know it would in the real life. I place the "medium" difficulty green about 170 yards out. Very rarely do I even make close to it distance-wise.

For what it's worth, I am using Gorillia mat, which I love and I am using yellow TM balls. All environment settings are set on default.

What can I do to improve this? I KNOW I am hitting my 5i longer than 150 yards! That is not even a question.

How big is your sim area

A small sim area or something in your field of vision could be having an adverse effect on your swing

My mat is about 10 feet away from the screen. I can swing freely with all my clubs.

A couple of things you could try/look into to start:

• tee a ball up to eliminate club mat interaction issues
• try a white ball
• indoor swing

Ugh, I would hate to have to put the ball on a tee every hit

Troubleshooting my friend. It would tell you the cause which could then get fixed by trying a different mat. If it is mat issues, the ST is reading accurately. You could bring the mat to the golf course, and you would hit similarly short.

I’d try a white ball. I took my SkyTrak to a range with yellow balls I got a ton of no reads and when it did read the results were all over the place. It was overcast and I’ve used my unit outside before without challenges so I feel the yellow was an issue.

You know what, that made me think. I wonder if the lighting in my basement has anything to do with it. It is not that bright in there.

Lack of lighting should not have any impact. It uses an IR strobe and should work fine in the dark. Direct light (sunlight, some spotlights etc) could have an adverse effect. Yes, try white ball. It is the quickest trouble shooting test you can do, and might just be it.

A Gorilla mat is similar (I think) to the Country Club Elite mat - very thick and plush. If you catch your shots the least bit heavy (mat first), the club will be slowed down dramatically and distance will suffer as compared to hitting off grass.

Many of us, myself included, see slightly longer distances with irons on SkyTrak due to lower spin and higher launch off mats.

Try some foot spray on your club face, and/or on the mat, to see where you’re striking the ball and the mat.

Yeah, the mat is super thick. I know I hit it sometimes. Great idea on the foot spray. I will have to check it out. Maybe I just suck at golf lol
