  • automatic swing recording and slow motion playback with kinovea

I figured I should start a new topic because the other thread has gotten a little long and confusing. Primarily I don't want anyone to think I am using ps3eye cameras for a dual recording setup. i've had a couple of people contact me after purchasing two ps3eyes cameras, asking how to get them working with the dual recording script. while you can get it to work, it is not easy to do. If you are looking to do a 2 camera setup, skip the ps3eye cameras. I would recommend the OV2710 usb cameras from eBay that will do 100fps at 640x480 (does not do 120fps as advertised). There are many lens options and what works for you will depend on how far away you will be placing the cameras. These run at around $40-50.

If you are looking for a very cheap 1 camera setup the ps3eye is great. Picture quality and frame rate aren't the best and getting 2 to work in kinovea is a pain but they cost less than $10.

you can run one ps3eye and one OV2710 camera together. i did this for a few months. in this video the ps3eye cam is on the right and the OV2710 is on the left. you can see that the ps3eye is grainy and at 60fps, it is not great but does the job. in addition to a sharper picture and increased fps, another reason I ended up getting two OV2710 cameras is because with one video at 60fps and one at 100fps I couldn't sync the videos up.

Here is what it looks like using 2 of the OV2710 cameras.

the way it all works is based around kinovea's live delay feature. if you set the delay to 3 seconds, whatever the cameras see in real time shows up on screen 3 seconds later. if you only want to see your swing once, in real time, you could just run kinovea on a second monitor and set the delay to suit your needs. my autoit script automates the recording and playback process. the sound of impact triggers the script which starts and stops the recordings in kinovea, then opens the recordings in vlc. this means that two 6-7mb files are created every time you hit a ball, so you do need to watch your disk space. it works great for me and a few others here on this forum. before I did this, I took a lot of videos with my phone and while the video quality on any modern phone or tablet is far superior to the OV2710 cameras, it is so much more convenient this way.

what you need to run a two camera setup is the following:
a good computer (if it can run tgc smoothly, you should be ok)
    2 cameras (either 1 ps3eye and 1 OV2710 or 2 OV2710's)
    active usb extension cable
    audiozonetrigger https://www.zonetrigger.com/sound-detection/
    microphone
kinovea version 0.8.15 (other versions will not work)
    vlc media player
    my autoit script

the software is free except for audiozone trigger with costs $25. for hardware costs, you have 2 cameras at $50 each, a microphone for $10, and a usb active extension for $10, so all in $145.

Can someone post a link to the 2710 cameras I should buy? I’ve got up to 10 ft to work with on each camera.

Not sure what's wrong but my setup, it doesn't seem to trigger kinovea recording. when I hit a ball it starts vlc but I get errors because it's trying to open a file that basically has no name. I see that it didn't trigger the recording because if I look at Kinovea the record button is not activated. any idea?? I followed the youtube instructions. I have 2 ov2710 cameras.

Thanks for the hard work on this inorkuo! I finally got around to setting this up the other night and haven't been able to get past the attached error. I'm using kinovea version 0.8.15 with VLC 32 bit, with the Audio Zone Trigger, everything is being run as an administrator and I've added both the Audio Zone Trigger and VLC exe files to windows virus protection. When I hit a ball, kinovea records in both windows, opens VLC and I get the error. Does anyone happen to have an advice to get past this? As a side note, I'm not sure if this is related, but I can't "play" a video clip from the capture windows within kinovea. I have to go to the viewing window and open the file.

Hello, did you get the VLC error above resolved? I am having the same issue? I think I am using the wrong script to trigger VLC look up location and files type.

*** Update: solved problem of file location - install VLC 32 bit; VLC picked up file from right location and replayed. You may need to tweak the delay time of the cameras very slightly to keep the replay in sync. Many thanks to Inorkuo for his help.

Appreciate your advice. I have 2 OV2710 attached to a Surface Book 2 directly to 2 USB port and the 2nd one does not registered/recognized on the Kinovea app.

Both cameras are recognized in the Windows 10 Camera app. What do I need to configure? Seen a few earlier threads but did not seem to have a solution. Thanks

I've been following this thread for a while now and finally trying to set this up. I'm not sure how important this is, but where is the microphone located in most peoples setup and what is the audio trigger? Is it the sound of the ball hitting the impact screen or the sound of the club hitting the ball?

          Thanks

I believe most folks are setting the microphone up to catch the sound of the club hitting the ball.

I'm not tech savvy and haven't used a pc in 20 years until I bought one for the sim. I would love to get a 2 camera set up with auto record and auto playback on the same screen as tgc.
I'm willing to put some time in to make it work but do I really have any chance of getting it to work?

I was never able to make it work as well as I was hoping it would work. The delay buffer was a huge issue for me initially. I reworked Inorkuo's software so that it beeps just before it starts recording. Rather than use a delay buffer triggered by the ball striking my screen, I make a noise by hitting my club against my mat, that triggers 5 seconds of recording, I wait for the beep, and then I swing. So really I've reworked the software so that it capture real-time, triggered by my making a noise (as compared to capture the last 5 seconds, triggered by the ball hitting the screen). My solution is not as elegant, but it was a step forward for me.

I've also had issues on playback, getting both videos working, and positioning them correctly on the screen. For some reason, none of that worked correctly for me, and I ended up reworking portions of that as well. Even now, about half the time my two playback screens appear on top of each other.

I've also had times where it fails to trigger capture (or stop capture) on one of the two cameras. It's like the record button click (to either start, or sometimes stop, recording) never registered. When that happens, there are ripple error effects with running the playback through vlc that result in vlc errors (because the video playback file doesn't exist).

Most frustrating part is that it works correctly some of the time. I can't figure out what is different when it fails, although I am guessing it must be a timing issue relating to the speed at which the script goes versus general processing time of the actions selected. I don't know how to eliminate this issue.

Anyway, some people have been very successful, seemingly "out of the box." That hasn't been my experience. Given you aren't tech savvy, you might want to go with a third party product such as Live View Golf.

the new kinovea beta 0.9.1 has a built in audio trigger and auto playback built in. i tried it last night with my two ov2710 cameras. i ran two instances of kinovea. the first instance had my two cameras running on a delay with audio trigger to record for 3.5 seconds. the second instance ran the playback. it worked great but my i7 6700 was close to 100% cpu usage with the sim and obs going at the same time.

This latest version appears to work great...I got the auto playback to work, by using the "open replay observer", but I could only get it to work by setting to the specific folder, which I think will change with each date. Does this mean this is something that needs to be set each day? Also, is there a way to save the layout/screen sizes?

        • In Delay mode, Kinovea is practically in "working" mode. That means, it is recording all the time to a buffer. So if in delay-mode recording is started, the load doesn't increase any more. In camera mode, the load is much lower, but once recording is pressed, the load comes up to the same level.
As I mention already in the Kinovea-forum, the load depends on the camera-settings (fps, size, mono-color) you use and of course on the cpu that is installed.
Higher number of cores/threads decreases the cpu load.
          Rough measures using 1 Kinovea/1camera: Pentium2:45-50%, i5-9600k: 27-35%, i9-9900k:10-14%

          • The new Kinovea beta is awesome! On initial testing, it works great for me. (I have not yet run it while also running sim software, but just for dual camera capture of a swing, everything is working as hoped.) I also haven't looked at load measuring.

My only issue is that the sound capture is too sensitive. Even at near max for me, the click of a mouse button or talking will trigger capture. A practice swing, where I brush the mat, is loud enough to trigger capture.
Has anyone else run into this?

Also, would be great if we could have a minimum delay between captures (maybe I need to suggest this over at the kinovea forum), such that we could tell it to lock out any triggers for [10] seconds after the last trigger.

The sensitivity is something you control, not Kinovea. Triggering on mouse clicks or talking is way too sensitive. Turn it down.

Are you interpreting the setting backwards (ie have it turned up when u think you've turned it down)?

The need for minimum delay lockout probably goes away once you set the sound trigger properly.

Definitely not backwards, as I can see the bar move as I make noise. I'll experiment with system settings for the mic and see if I can turn down sensitivity that way.

          • I just downloaded the latest beta version and I've got it automatically recording my swing (this appears to be working great). Is there a way to get it to automatically play it back in slow motion?

You could (mis)use a new function under Options/Preferences/Capture/Recording.
Setting the threshold value will trigger to change the fps-setting of the file that is created. It will be replaced using the value of „replacement fps“.

If i.e. your camera records at 100fps, you could set the threshold below the fps of your camera, i.e. 90. Setting the replacement value to 25, your video file will replay at about 25% (25/100) original speed.
If your camera records at 60fps, use 50 as a threshold and  15 as replacement value.

Thanks for the idea Reiner...There’s actually a built in automatic replay feature. It’s called “open replay observer”. I just couldn’t find/didn’t understand how it worked initially. It works great now.

          • Hi all. What a great thread!

I'm just stepping into this and have two OV2710 cameras on order. With the beta version of Kinovea, could somebody please talk me through the setup from start to finish in detail?

I'm trying to get ahead and have been testing it out on my desktop PC before the cameras arrive. I've set a delay of 2 seconds to the capture screen (a webcam), and am using the microphone from another webcam as a trigger (me simulating a ball strike by knocking on the desk!) to record 4 seconds. I was hoping to get 2 seconds either side of the trigger. Unfortunately, the recording starts at the point where the microphone triggers and catches only the 4 seconds from when I've knocked on the desk.

The 'Open Replay Observer' works great with one capture window and one playback window. Once I've got the recording working it'll be time to look at automatic replays of 2 cameras but that seems a long way off at the moment!

            Many thanks in advance.

            UPDATE:
Continued experimenting and can now record the trigger +/-2 sec by selecting Options-Preferences-Capture-Recording-Delayed. Excellent.
Have now hit a different snag in that selecting an 'Open Replay Observer' folder causes Kinovea to crash! Will keep plugging away as it shows great potential to be EXACTLY what I'm looking for... but grateful for any help!

            • This is by no means a comprehensive guide or am I qualified to be telling anyone how to set this up, but just in case this may help someone, here are the steps I used to setup the beta version with dual camera playback. There are a few things I haven't figured out yet, mainly how to save this setup so you don't have to redo everything each time you open/close Kinovea and I think there's probably a better way to setup the "replay observer/folder structures", but the attached worked great for me. Thanks to everyone that worked with Kinovea to make this happen!

wzjy47 - Thanks for the setup instructions pdf. It's been tremendously helpful.

One quick question - is there a way to make the drawing (line/annotation) persist between automatic playback (steps on page 11 of the setup instructions pdf)? I know that I can load the previous annotation via the .kva file, but they disappear when a new playback is loaded automatically from the observer folder.

Appreciate if anyone has a way to make the annotation persists between automatic playback.

                Hi Joan,

Thanks for your time. There is no 'Unhandled Crash' file in the folder I'm afraid.

I've had some success in opening a video in the normal way and, once I'd done this successfully, I was able to 'Open Replay Folder Observer' and everything worked superbly! I did this 5 times and it worked every time. On the 6th and subsequent attempts opening a video in the normal way also causes Kinovea to crash.

                Many thanks,
