  • Impact Screen 101

The impact screens for golf simulators are critical for its realism. The ideal impact screen will be durable, project well and not have a big bounce back. Most folks will have their sim room double as a theatre room so a good quality projector and impact screen are important. The impact screen may be flat, curved or have 3 screens to present a simulator surround experience. Full swing also has a Pass through screen that is very cool.

Most screens are built with an enclosure or stand alone. often side panels or netting is used to prevent stray balls from doing harm as well as cosmetics of the room. Make sure the screen is loose to prevent any big bounceback.

Certainly one can make an impact screen however various companies make high quality screens.

Once it arrives and I verify the quality I'll provide more details.

Ive hit about 80 balls into my screen and have noticed that it leaves some dimples where the ball impacts some of the time. The screen is pretty loose just tight enough to take the wrinkles and Ive got a net behind the screen that is pretty tight and does most of the stopping. Is this normal? Or do I need to change the tightness of the net or screen? I have a new protee screen and just want to make sure it doesnt wear early. Thanks

I want to try and quite the impact screen down. Has anyone put memory foam behind the screen and had any success?

If you did - did you put it up against the screen?
Did you get too much bounce back?

Are there any other ways to quite it down?

            regarding the screen brands...
is there any difference in the recommended minimum distance from the screen for each? i see that protee recommends about 10' from the screen but i imagine that might be due to their hcam/etc, not impact or screen "toughness" related. For skytrak or gc2, would hitting drivers full swing into a screen 8' away cause issues (holes/etc)?

I don't have any problems hitting driver into the PR20 from that close. However, I also don't have a very high SS. Note, I have a PR20 screen with a net directly behind it.

Sounds like the screen is just one of the wearable items in a Golf Sim that will have to be replaced periodically. I am planning a net and then a screen all about 1 foot away from back wall. most people reco 3 feet from back wall, but I'm presuming with a double backstop 1 foot should work out, One could even hang a blackout cloth inbetween to absorb even more shock and movement.

Has anyone tried putting a net in front of proj. screen to save wear? I would imagine the clarity of picture from projector suffers greatly.

Yes you are correct. The net makes the image look dull, not focused. Just buy the HD material from Cory at Par2Pro. I had mine 5 years now and it still is good as new other than some dirty ball marks. And if I had to bet mine has had more play than most others on this site. I play 4 nights a week (during the winter) and most generally not alone. I don't think you can go wrong with the HD screen material. Picture is great and the price is good.

Do you have anything behind your HD impact screen?

I just got everything back together tonight. I am very pleased with this set up. HD screen 1 inch memory foam sandwiched and hung on the net behind the screen. I think I have my screen a bit to tight now but the bounce back is about 3 ft. with a driver. Still need to hang the ceiling baffles. The picture with the foam behind is much brighter. The foam makes it much quieter also. Very happy. I bought 2 queen size toppers and hung them on the net with zip ties. I left a foot above and a foot below so they hang in the center section of my screen. I will have to get another and cut it and fill in the uncovered areas. You can definitely tell where the foam is at just by the picture on the screen. I am amazed at how much brighter the picture is. There is still a little bit of light gets through the foam as behind the screen the foam glows. But it is definitely an improvement.

DUH! Put the net behind your impact screen!

This works very well. The net absorbs most of the impact and saves wear and tear on the impact screen. Impact screen works just as it should - provides a clear image.

Would agree with the recomendation to use the Par2Pro HD material.

With a net behind the impact screen 12" / 30 cm is fine for distance to the back wall.

sbark... Aja is right on the money. Put the net behind your screen. Many of us have done it, and it works great. My HD screen from Cory is a year old and still looks brand new. Just regularly check your balls for marks that could stain or cause pulls on the screen. Those two things will help keep a good screen around for a long time!

I'm building a cage and planning to use a custom net from west coast netting and then corys hq2. I need to keep the screen at 1 ft from wall. Should the net be against the screen or a gap? I also want minimal bounce back.

                      Thanks.

While there may be a small gap, I have mine set up in such a way that the two touch.

When you guys say buy the HD material from Par2Pro, which one specifically are you saying to get? There are many different models and none say HD material.

Are you recommending the raw material? If so, do you have to hem the edges and then at grommets yourself?

I have a screen that is 1.5 years old and already has three holes and I have a net behind as well. It's wearing terribly and will be looking to get a new screen in the near future. Thanks for any recommendations!

I need to buy an impact screen for my 3rd car garage. I have purchased an epson 520 short throw projector and a skytrak. I was going to buy a 10x12 par2pro hq screen and hang it from a cable. I thwn was going to hang netting along the sides. Can I do this? Do I need a frame to tighten the screen or can it just be hung?
