  • From skytrak to pro-tee build out

Never thought I would do this but I have just updated my skytrak to the protee. I never thought the amount of work it was going to take to do this upgrade but wow I am surprised on the amount of energy and money that has left my wallet and the amount of hours getting this ready for the arrival of the pro-tee, First off I want to give props to Dennis at Pro-tee who spent his weekend online back and forth on emails helping me get the perfect set up and what was necessary to get ready for the new unit. But I wanted to share this and see if anyone has any thoughts for more improvement on getting this ready for tomorrows UPS delivery. Again thank you Dennis you were a great help
    1. super strut frame for side walls and impact screen16x10x10
    2. black out walls and ceiling(ceiling waiting for halogen light install from protee)
    3. 12 x 9 impact screen
    4. view sonic projector pjd 789
    5. new computer system
    6. built up raised floor
    7. SYNlawn golfing turf
    8. touch screen added
    9. protee system
here is the start with the skytrak set up then to the protee in progress

any questions or help is welcome

Not trying to burn Protee here, but isn't that a hardware "downgrade", not upgrade? You gained club data, but lost accuracy on the ball data and lost all measured spin...

Setup looks great tho, and I haven't met any other company with the level of customer service that Protee offers, and for free.

For your setup, everything looks great. Maybe just grab a steamer and get those wrinkles out of the screen, but then they'll naturally go away after a little time too. Good job.

I still have my Skytrak I will let you know on what is a down grade From what I researched I do not believe Pro Tee to be a down grade in the slightest. One big reason I went this direction I am a left hander and I play with a lot of friends that are right handers I constantly have to swing over the unit its never accurate that way and is very uncomfortable. The putting sensor and the two cameras vertical and horizontal will put this above what Skytrak offers without the lag compensation and miss shots, I am not banging on Skytrak at all It just doesn't fit my circumstances, If I am out of town on work The skytrak is perfect for me.

All good points IMHO. Once you have your Protee setup I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I know guys with Skytrak and Protee. The left/right handed aspect is a huge plus for Protee. When a left hander shows up to play with us on our Skytraks and GC2's we basically just tell him to go away! It's just too big a pain otherwise although of course if we were nicer people we could probably work around it! LOL Also the Protee putting is more accurate and you gain club data which is a big plus also. The long Skytrak delay is a real downer if you aren't used to seeing delays. The Protee misses some shots too...both are annoying in that aspect compared to my GC2 where I don't recall ever seeing a missed shot. In the end the Protee can be setup to reflect your real game pretty darn well and I'd call it more of a side-ways move which could make a lot of sense depending on one's requirements.

The biggest downside of Protee might actually not be the hardware but losing the Skytrak game improvement package. TGC has very simple driving ranges and that's about it. For skills improvement their range functionality is weaker than an Optishot. Hopefully TGC improves in that aspect but Skytrak seems to have a real vision in this area and I doubt that it would makes sense for TGC to try and match it.

The lefty-right combo playing together is a pretty big deal. I use my SkyTrak as a side business, and that is costly because I don't have enough room to set up two hitting stations. If I had the width it wouldn't be a problem, because you can set the SkyTrak on a swivel in the center, but that ads to the amount of space needed. I've thought about going to Pro Tee for that reason. I'm going to see how this winter goes with the "business" side of it. I might be doing the same thing next year.

I am still keeping my skytrak, i agree its still a real good product and the portability of it makes it fun to take out of town especially with out of town work when your bored to death. and i do enjoy the driving range aspect of the skytrak and can not forget about top golf that was recently put on. took the skytrak to a small bbq party and it was a blast. i tried the swivel thing and modified a lazy susan from the dining room table, my wife still is trying to figure out what happened to it, it kind of worked.

got my Pro tee today and started the install, so heres where I am at
        1. got both sensors placed which was a pain as these had to be lifted and leveled and each is at a different height.
        2. cut out opeinings for sensors
        3. finished glue on turf
        4. plumbed down for centers and set lights
        5. pulled cable to computer
        6.temporary set camaera
So I do have a question on this if any one has a pro tee does the vertical camera go on the floor I might have to PM pro tee on this as it is unclear, and if it goes on the floor why call it a vertical camera, confused the hell out of me tonight.
I should be able to finish this by tomorrow night If all goes as planned, But I might need a couple days for my body to heal as I feel like i have done An iron man triathalon and i am to damn sore to swing a club, might be able to play around at augusta with my putter that shouldnt hurt to bad.

Build looks great...to answer your question,

The Vcam should be at the same level as the sensor mat. Most prefer to put it on the left side which would be behind a right handed golfer. I believe it should be about 1 foot ahead of the sensor mat and about 7 to 8 feet on the side. I am right handed and when I am addressing the ball, the vcam is behind me about 7 feet and about 1 foot ahead toward the screen. I hope that makes sense.....

I love my ProTee....I believe it is an upgrade from skytrac....I just upgraded to 1070 graphics card, with 17 core and it is amazing playing TGC with 0 shot delay and full 60 FPS with no stuttering plus recording my rounds with webcam.....

ONly advice is put in the time to setup right and take the time to learn about all the settings.

Thanks guys on the response yeah being a Senior Project manager for a construction company has its upside when and you always have a favor owed somewhere the strut was a freebie by one of my electricians it was a simple decision on that route and I was looking at the emt and wanted more strength for adding what ever needed, Yeah I can't wait on starting up the computer tonight on this and start the installing and setup process, I am glad to here that the upgrade to the computer system is kicking it I just built my computer and running a monster system for this simulator
                my specs are
                skylake I7 6700
                asus deluxe Z170
                corsair dominator 2X16 32 GB 3200 DDR4
                ASUS 1080 graphics card
a little over the top but what the heck......
I wanted to post tonight's pictures As I finally got done and am now into the software and set up stage thanks for the interest in this build out it was fun and can't wait till the weather change to really get into playing this
                1. Installed transformer and hooked up lighting added switch next to the touchscreen monitor
                2. Set cameras
                3. Installed the top back on which was a pain because of the wiring and new lights had lights up and had to take back down and fish wires through the top as to not cut the fabric.
                4. Grab a beer and relax

Looking good....I think you may have too big a gap between your lights ....when setting up and you are not getting nice long ball streaks, that might be your issue....looks great!!!

just added the lawn for the perimeter as the way I had it with carpet and plywood was hella loud when the balls came down on that. this is working beautifully the ball falls into a big green pillow. live and learn.

Alright guys I think I am totally done with this sim room, so upgraded my projector to an optoma and got it installed, installed new impact screen went and picked up a new couch for inside the house and donated the old couch to the sim room ( had to spend a little money on my wife) built this club holder today and got it installed, so thanks for looking at my progress and all the help I had in the last couple months before the build even started and the research along the way. Here are the final pictures, see you on the tour.

                        Cheers !

Looks great! Perfect little slice of golf/theater paradise right there. Like the touch with the rough along the sides and the clean strip down the middle, definitely adds to the look. And very nicely done on the homemade club holder too! Look forward to seeing you on tour, youll have to post a round at some point and show us it in action.

You gotta be having that feeling right now, that feeling we've all got once we finished up our sim rooms and every time we step inside it, tough to describe other then a warm feeling of pure joy capped off with a goofy little smirk on our faces about how crazy it is that we actually have a golf simulator in our own houses haha.
