Holy Grail Hitting Strip

I’ve seen it mentioned here in a few spots but I wanted to give my .02 on the insert from gunghogolf after getting it installed and putting through 100-200 swings.
First off, the team there at gung-ho does a great job; from answering initial questions prior to purchase (skytrak) and follow through on the back end. They also shipped ahead of schedule which was a nice surprise.
My original mat had a longer ply height resulting in lower than expected numbers when I first starting using the ST. At first I questioned the unit but was able to run it side by side with trackman to verify. This also gave me a chance to hit off a fiberbuilt insert. Launch numbers were comparable to irl but as a digger I couldn’t quite warm up to the feeling. ST and TM launch speeds and angles were nearly identical throughout the session so I was able to single out the mat as most likely culprit.
I decided to give the Holy Grail Strip a try and so far I’m very pleased. Install was pretty straight forward, I haven’t stuck it down yet so I can’t speak on the adhesive.
Ball/club interaction is good and so far seems to give very accurate results compared to the feeling of the swing whether fat/thin/push/pull.

Anybody else give it a try yet?

This is Rob. I have a used driving range and was wondering if I could insert the HG in it to improve the mat. I can measure the depth of my mat to see if it will properly fit. I saw that you mention velcro and such under HG mat. I will not be able to do that as my mat will need to move. Is there a method of doing this?

The HG strip definitely needs velcro at front and back to hold it in place securely, and it's a bit difficult to get under it and pull apart that velcro - nothing you'd want to do on a regular basis. So if your mat needs to move, you could do one of the following:

1. Attach the entire mat on a piece of 3/8" plywood, and velcro the HG strip to that

2. Figure out a way to firmly adhere a thin piece of plastic (like this 1/32" x 24" x 48" one: https://amzn.to/3lPsMEl) to the underside of the mat, and velcro the strip to that. Not sure what the material is on the bottom of your mat, and what it might take to attach the plastic sheet to it - some kind of glue or double-sided tape would be what I would try.

Anyone here compare the HG to the HD Golf SoftStrike? I have used the CCE, SoftStrike and now using a strip from EZ Tee (which has been the best so far). Th SoftStrike had a few issues for me. One was it is too forgiving in my opinion. Second was the build quality was awful and I started seeing the turf bubble up on the sides making is hard to get a level spot. The HG looks similar in build but does not have the spring action. Also saw a few posts about the turf bubbling up. I am always looking for new strips to try but would love to make sure it is no like the SoftStrike mat.

Any issues with the EZ Tee? Seems that or the Holy Grail based on reviews (have not used either yet) are the 2 to choose from.

Been using it for about 8 months and find it easy on joints unlike my CCE but still penalizes me on fat shots unlike my softstrike. I got a 1x4 strip for $40 picking it up at the local distributor I got from main corporate who connected me with him. Would have been another $40 to ship. But still, at $80 it’s still way cheaper than these other options.

only reason why I’m considering a different one is to just try it. The EZ Tee has not hurt my real game so I’d do it again if there really isn’t anything better.

We've had only 3 cases of the turf bubbling up on our Holy Grail mats, and have replaced them. It was a temporary issue with a very small run of them that didn't get enough glue.

Springs only add complexity in my opinion. The HG is very simple mechanically, and we unconditionally guarantee it for 12 months. Have sold several hundred in the last 7 months or so with only those 3 issues.

Got my strip in today (thanks Ron!). I haven't had time to use it much by I hit some wedges to get an idea of how it feels vs the quattro mat I've been using. The #1 reason I bought the HG was for comfort and it delivers there. There is a huge difference in hitting off the HG vs the quattro. The quattro has a plusher turf (ball doesn't roll as easily) but it's much harder underneath and has been killing my hands. The HG is much nicer to hit off - the give from the foam really works and at least for me makes a massive difference in how much impact my hands feel with each shot. I can tell I'm really going to enjoy using this.

Here's 5 good shots (out of about 10 with each) using a 46deg pitching wedge (nominal 130yd club on the course for me) hit using the quattro mat (labeled hybrid) and the holy grail (HG) (labeled wedge) measured with a GC3. The overall yardage is similar. This isn't a great sample size yet - I'll have to spend more time w/ the HG and hit more shots. So far, the HG appears to launch a little bit higher and spin a little bit less than the quattro does. My initial thought is that this is a negative as I think the quattro doesn't spin as much as grass - with my longer irons on the GC3 I hit it farther than I do on the course (I assume because the spin is lower). I'll have to see what the higher launch angles do w/ the longer irons - if they bring my yardage on the GC3 closer to the course, then it might be that the quattro is letting me get away with a slightly fat shot (sliding into the ball) and the HG is actually closer to the grass performance. It's hard to tell at this point. (I probably should take the GC3 to the course one day and do some measurements off grass to get a baseline).

I just cut a hole in my Quattro to fit the HG strip. Had to see what all the hype is about. I am a digger, but I don't think the feel difference is that big. Maybe I don't dig as deep as I thought, but I always take at least a small divot IRL. Quattro has to be one of the best single piece stand and hitting mats.

How do you use your HG... is it in the Quattro or another mat? I tried to follow instructions with front and back a tight fit and sides a bit looser. Mine in the Quattro, fits high on the front and back as the foam/velcro there is a little deeper than the foam in the middle. I even opened the subfloor to allow the HG to sit deeper than the Quattro as the HG is a bit thicker. Also, the sides of my HG are lower than the center. Welcome any suggestions. To be fair, I haven't asked GungHoGolf these questions.

If it sits lower in the middle, can you just shim it with cardboard or something under the middle pieces?

I have the Quattro right now and have really been wanting to try HG as well (I also love the idea of getting a 50/50 first cut and deep rough Divot Action insert to practice chipping from). Does anyone have any thoughts on which the best option would be for me?
1. Cut a hole in the Quattro to fit the inserts
2. Get some foam tiles from amazon and cover them in a putting grass as my stance area and cut the insert out of that
3. Buy the HG mat + insert

Also, would the Divot Action insert fit well with the HG or are they different heights/sizes?

Would love any suggestions as I keep changing my mind on what to do!

I used thin foam about 1/16-1/8 to level it out front to back. They should make the foam higher to address the Velcro but easy fix regardless
