  • Best mat I've ever hit off of, wow!

I'm in the process of building my golf sim and have been using old mats from when I was a Golf Course Superintendent. I'm a 50 year old with a 10 handicap with the old system...if that matters. I've also got a wrist that is so bad that when the doctors look at my MRI, they all say...wow, that's impressive since it's so bad. So yes, I need all the cushioning I can get if I want to hit a couple hundred balls at a time off a mat and live to tell about it.

I purchased a CCE mat after reading about it here on this site and ordered through Costco for $450. Then I went to my old club where I was the Super....and they bought new mats which changed everything for me. They were so good that the next day I called the Pro to ask what he purchased. It's the Quattro Mat from Wittek Eagle One....a company I used to buy things from so I was familiar with them. Top notch products for sure.

So I ordered one and will be returning my CCE mat back even before I try to compare. I paid $399 for the Wittek Quattro plus another $100 for shipping. Next day after I ordered (ouch), they went on sale for $325. Get yours now.

Just thought I'd throw this post out there for others that are old and have pain like I do so that there is a solution...the Quarrto!

    Play well.

  • I know this is an old post.. however does this mat have the same feel as the fiberbuilt?
i have seen others say the mat caused joint pain? I have been hitting off of the CCE and it’s been terrible on my shoulder
I have bought the fiberbuilt strip.. thinking of putting that into this CCE. But would prefer just 1 mat vs 2.. how does the Quattro really perform next to the fiberbuilt? I know they are 2 diff.. but that would save me on some money as well if I could just do 1 mat vs 2..

Evenpar - you may not save money if you do 1 FiberBuilt (FB), as they are about double what a Quattro will cost you. That is why everyone buys the FB strips, to save money. I really don't have a choice as I will be hitting off a ProTee sensor mat which has a FiberBuilt screwed onto it... however, I've heard from many others, that to save your wrists, use the FiberBuilt for hitting off of.

I've hit off of many simulators (in local Sim setups), and the ones that were not FB always ended up hurting my wrists, even after a 1 hour session. One time I did play off a ProTee simulator and I don't remember my wrists hurting after that one, so I guess that's pretty telling for me.... I think a lot of it may be how low you go, how deep your divots are in real life, the lower you go, the more likely you're going to need to hit off of a FB, if you're a picker (picks it off and barely takes a divot), then you may be able to consider the others - so I would suggest, if you can, get to a local simulator setup in your town, and hit off of their mats, and see if you have any wrist pain (don't go more than 1 hour, or 1 hour & 15 minutes).

That's really the only way to know - good luck!

Its such a personal choice... Do you sweep, take a divot, steep, shallow, all of the above?? I personally am of the belief that there is no *perfect* mat, or hitting strip, in terms of replicating the feel of real turf. Add to that the fact that different regions--or even different parts of the same town!--might have completely different ground characteristics under club.

I bought a Fiberbuilt 5x4 Traditional. It has the 12x48 fiberbuilt hitting strip. Since then I've tried the original FB strip, then inserted a homemade divot action, homemade gel style,, an actual Divot Action (as well as a rough and deep rough Divot Action)...and now I'm getting ready to try the Quattro. They ALL have pros and cons, and I don't think somebody else can advise what to buy. You just need to try them.

My hope is the Quattro will be a good blend of the Divot Action shot feel, fiberbuilt joint ease, and durability/sustainability of a CCE type material.

We have a custom CCE mat set up with the Uneekor QED, we are considering an insert to reduce impact and provide an improved shot feel. The Uneekor has an 18 inch wide hitting zone which comes in handy for a narrow room with L and R play.
Is everyone still liking their Quattro mat?
Can I customize an 18 -20 inch strip?
Would love feedback if cut/inserted in to a CCE? Height tips on install. Gel add etc...
      Best place to purchase
      Thanks

  • Ok. Let me know your thoughts once you try the Quattro mat.. thanks appreciate the feedback

    • This post is about 7 months old.. curious about the Quattro mat now that everyone has hit thousands of shots by now.... what’s your overall opinion now? Would you still purchase this mat?

I have only hit a couple hundred shots on mine so far but it is on a concrete floor and I've hit some fat ones and really felt no pain or discomfort.  It doesn't feel like it bottoms out.  I don't dig or have a high swing speed but I'm really enjoying the mat so far.

    • Best mat ever.

Yes, I'm actually going to buy another one or two when I finish my outdoor putting green.

The Quattro mats at the course are holding up very nice as well and they get a ton of play.

      • bogey This is what the YGT-3D looks like now.. You can definitely see a bit of wear but its just cosmetic so far. If I get close I don't see any noticeable hollowing out of the turf.

I just planning my SIM build. I think I'm going to try the YGT. I need a double sided with a center strike like your picture frodaddy. Anyone with recommendation on the 2 stance mats i will need to buy\build? I also can't decide if I should rip up the berber carpet to start on the concrete or just leave the carpet.

      • I've had the mat since April and have hit tons of shots on it. Mevo+ arrived just last week and I've played 18 - 36 holes / day plus range sessions and think the mat is awesome. Joints feel fine and the mat is holding up great. I imagine it will last several years before I'll need to purchase a new mat ( considering I'll rotate it once significant wear becomes apparent ). What I also like is you get penalized for fat / poor shots. I've hit off fiberbuilt mats and while they are excellent, you can get away with some poor swings on them without any penalty. For me the quattro mat will make me a better ball striker and will translate better to playing real golf outdoors.

I think if you dig through this thread and others you will find similar sentiment from users who have used both and will attest to how the quattro improves ball striking vs fiberbuilt. I still think fiberbuilt is an excellent choice and great on joints, etc etc. You can't go wrong with it and if you were really worried about joint discomfort and wanted to make sure you were using the most joint friendly mat that existed I would go fiberbuilt. Otherwise the quattro mat is excellent and not "grabby" for me at all. I've hit 1000's of shots on it / week and have not had any joint pain and have hit my share of chunky fat shots that I know on other mats would have caused pain. I've noticed my ball striking has improved and I've seen it translate to results playing outdoors.

        • I've had mine for a few months now and I agree with those who say it's the best mat ever.

It's even better if you take the time to cut out a section of the bottom and install a gel insert like when building the DIY true strike.

However, for those with joint pain or back issues, Fiberbuilt still might be the way to go for you. I had a Fiberbuilt previously and it's less impact.

Do you feel adding the gel insert really makes that big of a difference? Do you have pictures? Did you just cut out the bottom layer of the quattro?

I'm not sure. I added the gel right away and I haven't hit off the mat without it in several months. No pics but yeah I just cut out the bottom foam layer.

        • Mine arrived today. For those that have cut one into hitting strips, is there a best way to cut it?

With the turf grain? Across? With the under-lying springy layer? Across it?

I assume a regular utility is sufficient.

Yes I used a box cutter. I turned it upside down and used a straight edge to score a few marks..then one or two deep cuts and its clean.

How difficult was it to insert, are you happy with the performance?

First extended session on it today, about 100 air-conditioned balls versus the 104° outside! 😎

Pretty impressed. No pain or joint complaints at all. Very realistic feedback and shot performance... expected distances dead on, fat shot reductions, etc.

Wasn’t the easiest thing to cut, but I flipped it over, measured/traced out what I wanted, and it slipped right into my 1’x4’ Fiberbuilt tray slot next to my stance mat.

Not crazy about the color, I like that dark-ish green tone a lot better, but so far, it’s a winner. Slightly firmer than my DivotAction inserts, but a little quieter and no joint pains so far. 👍🏼

        • Well I may just get the Quattro. I need something I can move around and the FB setup seems to be too heavy. And I assume if it gets tough to hit, I can later buy the FB strip. Wondering if it can work on the side of the Quattro Though, or is is necessary to cut it out and add within?

          • Hey Ducati07! So from one old superintendent to another, are you still happy with your mat purchase. I'm blown away by the prices of the name-brand mats. As you know, you can buy a pallet of high quality turf for less than a 4x5 mat for crying out loud. I guess we should have been growing plastic grass instead of the real stuff.

I'm just starting my build here in Texas and the mat is the item i"m struggling with the most. Fortunately, I don't have your joint issues. The pain for me is specifically in my left butt cheek (where my wallet is located). I was leaning toward using an old mat from our range and buying a good hitting strip but based on many other posts it appears keeping a strip in place is a big issue so I'm back to a full mat. Hope your build is done by now and has worked out for you. By the way, I was a superintendent way back in the day then spent 33 years as an agronomist for the USGA. Also, two of my sons are supers here in Texas.

That's awesome that your boys are following your footsteps, always great to hear from another Super! I really couldn't be happier with the mat and would never buy anything else at this point. I'd even highly recommend the Quattro if you don't have any pain. It comes down to not only how the mat has minimal impact for the body, it's just as important as, how it plays.

Striking the ball off this mat has a better feel than any mat I've ever used. I've never hit from a Fiberbuilt mat but it seems to me that it doesn't even compare when it comes to a realistic feel.

                • I just ordered two 12"x35" strips from Steven at YGT in China. He said it should take around 15 days to ship. I think some others have done this but I'll let you know how it goes. I'm currently limited to a temporary outdoor setup until my house construction is done, but my plan is to either use this 3D mat or a fiberbuilt, which is why I ordered this size so they'll be interchangeable. I have a lot of experience with fiberbuilt since that is what I'm using now so I should be able to give a good comparison.

It was $150 for both shipped to NY.

Curious to see your review! I’m between these two mats myself. I’m thinking of a 4x5 Quattro/3D and adding a Fiberbuilt strip alongside later. Or hoping the Quattro/3D is great on It’s own.

Looking forward to the feedback, we are considering both. Using a Country Club Elite mat today, harsh on the body and grabs your club.

Yeah I started with a Country Club Elite and it was ok but I did start getting some elbow pain after a while.

                • Update on my mat. I have the YGT and have hit tens of thousands of shots. My son hits about 1,000+ every week for practice and I have not seen any wear that diminishes the feel of the hitting surface. There is slightly noticeable marks and it has become really soft to the touch in that area, but still hits the exact same as when it was new. When I say soft, it isn’t bristled like new turf, but soft like the sharp bristles have been taken down.
